Hotels still in demand

Demand for good hotels is outstripping supply, with properties coming and going on the market at high speed, property agent Christie & Co has said.

Low interest rates, a fast-growing domestic market and, despite the downturn caused by global and economic uncertainty, the attraction of owning your own hotel, meant the market remained in strong shape, said Christie & Co.

The hot summer, and subsequent good year for domestic tourism, was also encouraging buyers, particularly from London, to look for hotels in the provinces.

The market was also seeing more multiple bidding, again another sign of strong demand, and at least 25% of hotel sales were now web generated, it said.

East Anglia was proving one popular area, as was Scotland, where country house hotels were particularly in demand.

The company also described the West Country as a “honey pot” for buyers. For instance, the six-bedroom Exmoor House Hotel, near Minehead, Somerset, attracted four buyers in competition when it came on the market, said Christie & Co.
