Hong Kong: Visitor arrivals drop to 12-year low

The number of visitors arriving in Hong Kong fell to its lowest level for more than 12 years in April as the Sars outbreak took a devastating toll on travel and tourism-related industries.

The numbers plunged to 493,666 - down 64.8 per cent from April last year, when 1.4 million visitors arrived in the city, according to figures released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The number of arrivals is the lowest since February 1991 when the Gulf war was deterring visitors.
