Hawaii hotel first as smoke free

Hawaii has its first smoke-free hotel. The Ohana Reef Lanai hotel in Waikiki officially made the conversion this month and began handing out free 'kick-the-habit' kits consisting of chewing gum, teeth whitening toothpaste, herbal tea and a pamphlet with tips for quitting smoking and promoting the health benefits of a smoke-free lifestyle. The kits are available to registered guests through Dec. 31, while supplies last.

It took more than three months to complete cleaning and renovating all rooms and public areas of the 110-room boutique-style hotel. Guests holding reservations for smoking rooms have been contacted and transferred to other Ohana hotels.
