Smarter sommeliers

Clive Hartley, senior head teacher, food & beverage at the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE at Ryde has developed a new one-year sommelier course. The author of the informative Australian Wine Guide has announced the initiative between the TAFE and the Australian Sommelier's Association.

Covering subjects including Australian and International Wine Knowledge; Wine Production; Sensory Evaluation; Viticulture; Matching Wine & Food and Wine Management the sommelier course requires one and a half days per week tuition and 150 hours of industry work experience. Three weekend residential workshops in vineyards and wineries are included in the "hands on" experience.

The course will run from April 2003 to April 2004 allowing for maximum experience at vintage time. The cost of the course is $250.00 per semester and the successful students will receive a TAFE NSW Hospitality Supervision Certificate lV.
